The College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin announces the Austin ISD Artist Award

Austin, Texas – The College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin is pleased to announce a new scholarship opportunity for graduating high school seniors in the Austin Independent School District.

The College of Fine Arts’ new Austin ISD Artists Award will be offered to up to three seniors each year who will attend UT Austin to major in the fine arts. The Austin ISD Artists Award is a four-year scholarship that covers the cost of tuition, adjusted individually based on additional sources of financial support from the university.

The announcement of this award coincides with the opening ceremony of the new Austin ISD Performing Arts Center on January 22, 2015. Dean Douglas Dempster said, “Austin ISD has made an extraordinary commitment to expanding educational opportunities for its students in the fine and performing arts.  This will improve student retention and academic performance, and it will lead more students to find a path to college. We hope this award will enable recipients to pursue their academic and artistic goals at UT Austin without financial barriers. The College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas is proud to partner with AISD.”

Qualifying seniors will be invited to apply in February. Recipients will be announced in March and must demonstrate excellence in the arts, academic achievements, community involvement and financial need.  Applicants will be asked to submit recommendations from educators in the Austin ISD and local arts organizations.

The College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin is comprised of the Butler School of Music, the Department of Theatre and Dance, and the Department of Art and Art History.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I haven’t decided on a college yet?  This is not a problem.  You should apply for the scholarship even if UT-Austin is only one of the schools you are considering.  If the scholarship recipient is not accepted to UT-Austin or decides to attend another school, the award will be given to an alternate or rolled over to the following year.

I never made All-State or All-Region, and I don’t plan to major in music.  Should I still apply?  Yes.  The scholarship is not limited to music majors, and musical accomplishments are only one factor.   We are looking for well-rounded students who excel in all four areas described above.

What music should I select for my audition tape?  Think of the audition tape as an Olympic diving competition.  The recording will be judged by both level of difficulty and execution.  Select a piece or an excerpt that best demonstrates your strengths as a musician.  District music or a UIL solo are good choices, but you should not feel limited to those options.

Do you require professional sound quality on the recording?  No.  We do not expect you to go to a recording studio to make your tape.  An ordinary home recording is fine, but use common sense and try to minimize background noise so that your performance can be heard clearly.

Can I just send a copy of my transcript?  No.  In fairness to all applicants, an original sealed transcript is required.

What if I can’t get all the application materials in on time?  We reserve the right to reject any untimely or incomplete applications.  However, if you miss the deadline for some unexpected reason, send the materials in as soon as possible, preferably with an enclosed explanation.

Are orchestra or choir members eligible?  No.  The scholarship is currently limited to seniors enrolled in band.

I am not a student, but I would like to make a contribution to the scholarship fund.  What should I do?  We are always delighted to receive contributions in order to continue and strengthen this annual scholarship.  Tax-deductible contributions may be sent to: Caswell Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 90785, Austin, Texas 78709-0785

Do you have a website?  Yes.  Please visit us at www.caswellscholarship.org.  You can also find the Caswell Scholarship Foundation on Facebook.

Who should I contact if I have more questions?  Talk to your high school counselor or band director, call Zach Wolfe (832-707-5883) or Alan Hutcheson (512-965-0328), or email us at questions@caswellscholarship.org
